I need to purchase a new engine for my 1984 Catalina 25 this season and have a couple of questions. The current engine is a 2 stroke Mercury 9.9 (short shaft) with electric start. Is there any speed benefit or any pitfalls in purchasing a more powerful engine or a longer-shaft engine?

I have the same boat (1986 c-25, fixed keel, tall rig) and just went through the same thing. The boat came with a Yamaha 9.9 2 stroke that worked well. I wanted a second motor for peace of mind and really wanted a four stroke. I researched, called a catalina dealer, and asked alot of questions. In the end, I felt the 8-9.9 hp four strokes were just too heavy so I went with a Mercury (Tohatsu) 6 hp longshaft. The motor runs great, will push the boat at hull speed (6.2 mph) which is all any motor can do, and sips gas. The nice thing is I can take it off by myself if need be. I bought mine on craigslist for $500. It was like new and only had 10 hours on it. Paid less than 1/3 of the current price for that motor at WM. I haven't regretted mu decision one bit even though some said it wasn't enough motor. So far that hasn't been my experience!

Don't miss checking this place out especially if you live in New England

I was in the market for the Honda 2 for my Catalina16.5. My local dealer and friend told me this was the best place for prices - unfortunately, I live in Delaware. But I used their prices as leverage....

Defender.com in Waterford, CT ( I called and the Rep was very helpfull)

For the Honda, I would have had to pick it up at the store - no shipping (by contract with Honda).

It was the best price - ANYWHERE I looked, sometimes by $400. !

Good luck

I just replaced the Johnson 9.9 with a Tohatsu 9.8 and am very pleased with the motor. I did need to replace the motor mount on my Catalina 25. It was original and reallly couldn't handle the new motor. The motor is the longest shaft available and does not come out of the water in rough waters. It is quiet, uses 1/3 the fuel, and has the extra power that a smaller motor does not have. I have been out with 20 knots on the bow and the boat moves along just fine with plenty of power remaining.
I bought it online and got a good price.
