Pass on Magellan

If you still have a chance to avoid buying a Magellan, by all means avoid them. I had the Map 410 which was usable but just barely. Magellan as much as admitted it was prety awful. I swapped it on a Meridian sport color which is just plain awful. The Navionics charts downloaded off the CD are not so great. It's nearly impossible to tell Barnegat Bay from the land of Island Beach, and that from the Atlantic Ocean. Some how the combination of GPS and software can not translate depths correctly. It shows depth in a format of a small digit next to a larger digit which does not appear to have any relationship to the actual depth at that spot. Magellan was not real interested in trying to figure out what was going on. I never got any sort of answer from them as to what was happening. From my point of view, and I think you're likely to agree agree, accurate display of the depth on Barnegat bay is the primary reason for using a GPS there. For actual navigation all we need is the tower at the nuke plant, and Barnegat light!

Magellan Meridian

A Magellan Meridian is fine and quite useable aboard. Caveat is DON'T unless absolutely necessary upgrade the operating system with their updates, they are totally incompetent in the programming arena. DO add a flash memory card it allows for uploading charts and maps which you from which you have cut and pasted from their mapsource. Also be advised that unless you have a REAL old fashioned serial port that you must by a USB convertor cable and not a simple serial to USB cable in order for you to interface your computer..around the $40-50 mark. g'Luk
