It looks like I amy repower my 1983 Cat 30 over the next winter. Does anybody have any experiences to share about shops that do repowers on the lower 1/2 of the Chesapeake Bay? Good and bad comments are welcome. Alos, what brands of engines did you go with? What choices did you have? Power levels? Why did you go the way you did? Details please. :)

What would you like?

Dave, you ask a lot of questions but you do not impart much info!!! What do you have now, Gas or Diesel? What is the horsepower? If your engine was working well would you be satisfied with what you have? I have a C28MKII with the same engine that is in the newer C30 ie Universal M-25XPA 23Hp with a two blade prop. I can do close to 6kts at 2100rpm The same engine in a 30 with a three blade prop at a little higher rpm will get the same or a little better. Since this engine is the marine version of the D950, made by Kabota tractors you can obtain many of the spare and Maint. parts at a much more reasonable price. If you like what you have and you don't have the bucks for a new boiler, then rebuild it. Now go do some homework and find someone to do the job. good luck Charlie

Dear Dave, I'm not sure if this post was geared to me or not but I'm unaware of anyone in your area outside the normal Zanhisiers...and other boat yards. If you need more specific groups please feel free to give me a call. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody

I've done homework!

I've done my homework. My 1983 Cat 30 as a Universal 5411 (11hp). It has the standard 2 blade prop. The engine runs fine, but is severly under powered. On flat water it's fine, I can cruise at 5.3 and top out at 5.8. But if there is any wind or waves I can barely make any headway. The engine is running fine and has fairly low hours (around 1500). This little engine was fine on the upper bay but conditions are susally rougher down here. As for homework, I'have done quite a bit. It seems that many marine diesels are based on Kubota tractor engines: Universal, Westerbeke, and BetaMarine. I know that Yanmar engines are too tall to install without significant modification. So that leaves me little choice but to go with a Kubota based engine. What I was really asking for wan't help in choosing an engine, but for peoples experiences with the shops they have delt with.
