Rod

I have an older unit Adler Barbour that has r-12 in it. How do I know if it needs re-charging, and if it does how can I add the r-12? Do you have any charging hoses available to borrow? Thx. BTW, This unit has performed flawlessly for 8 years now! Runs dockside off a battery charger during the week , and off ship's battery on weekends and cruises(1 month cruise). Highly recommend this unit!

quick check

Having an HVAC background, the quick check would be to see if you are getting a sweat back to the suction or low side to the compressor. R-12 has become very expensive lately, about 30-40 for a 12oz. can. Not being familiar with that brand system I dont know of any querks it may have. have you noticed a change in its operation? Freon does not wear out or break down in a system unless air has been introduced. make sure if you decide to put gauges on, use the shortest hose possable, vacum them down first, and try not to use ones that have been used on modern refrigerants as the oils are incompatable. but look for the sweating first, if you dont see any check your lines for signs of oil, that is the best way to find a leak, at least the easiest. Hope that helps.
