PD

I have had a few too many issues this year with my engine. Lately, after running the engine for a while and stopping it to sail, when I go to restart it turns and turns and after a bit starts sluggishly. The last time when I got to my mooring turned it off and tried to start it I could not get it going again at all. But when it is running it seems OK. Someone suggested that this is an issue that requires a rebuild because of compression issues. As of yet, my boatyard (which does not have a Yanmar knowledgeable mechanic) has not diagnosed the problem. 1. In MA (or New England) does anyone know a good Yanmar guy that travels to various boatyards? 2. Rebuild or replace? Who rebuilds? 3. What is the least expensive option for a replacement? A "no-name" engine is OK with me as my boat is probably worth $12k and putting a lot of money into it just doesn't make sense. Thanks for any advice. Now is the time for me to address this issue. Sailing isn’t fun knowing that ones engine is questionable… Pete

Other possibilities

Just because it is sluggish to start does not necessarily mean poor compression requiring replacement. I'd have it checked (the compression) - any diesel mechanic can do this. You could be looking at a much less costly fix -might be the starter or even as simple as the starter wiring causing reduced current, blocked exhaust elbow (diesels are sensitive to high back pressure), poor injector performance, bad timing, bad fuel pump, etc. I'd start with the Yanmar folks in Middleboro to find out who they recommend.
