I have two questions the first the winches on my 25.5 (1984) don't catch and have been slipping. Where can I get rebuild kits for these? They are self tailing maxwell winches. The second question I have is I have some cracks in the gel coat on the deck where you walk to get to the bow of the boat and in the cockpit floor. What is the best thing to do about this? Is there a product out there that is like rhino liner that can be sprayed on these areas to seal and strengthen them. Has anyone used a product like this? I seen brochure for rhino liner that said they do use it for this type of application. Sure could use some insight, thanks.

Maxwell still in business

I had rebuilt my Maxwell winches and was able to get parts from them. They are in Cal. I replaced all the spings in both of them but one of them still never worked right even after thr rebuild. SO I did it again with the same results. In the end I replaced the winches and sold the Maxwell to a guy who still had the same trouble. He later found the springs to be all of the problem and was able to replace the spings and got them to work real well.

Bic Pen springs

I was sailing from Racine to Winthrop Harbor on Lake Michigan when the starboard winch gave out. Self Tailing single speed (odd on the port side I have a two speed...??) ANyway we just used the dead winch as a turnbuckle wnad went ot the port side to get us into Winthrop Harbor - tacking was interesting....but up on taking the winch apart I found that the springs on the cam gears (prawls?) has completly dissapeared and were ground up....faced with the prospect of buying a new winch I took the sugestion of a mechanic and used some trimmed bic pen springs....they did not fit in the holes...so I drilled the holes out to fit....I used them for the next tow season....this year upon winch maintenance I'll check on them...probably call maxwell for new parts... No longer making winches.

Maxwell is no longer in the winch business. I think that parts are scarce. They are still making other boating products and some of their stuff my be avaiable or interchangable with their other products.

Order the springs from Maxwell.

I had to replace the springs in my Maxwell winches last summer. Maxwell sent me new springs with no problem. I would call them and order the replacement springs. The cost is reasonable.
