Hi all - I have a few leaking chain plates - probably all of them so I am going rebed them all this spring. I am wondering if I could rebed them while the mast is still up. I would obviously do them one at a time and support each side with a halyard. My real concerns are the side-stays that run all the way up...do you think its safe as long as I support the mast with a halyard to a rail base? I wave a Catalina 30 with 2 lowers and 1 upper on each side along with a headstay and backstay. Thanks in advance. Rob

They are called shrouds and your plan

is good.

No Problem

We've done the same thing with our Catalina 30. It's no problem at all. Just support the mast using the main halyard, loosen the appropriate turnbuckle, and access to the chainplate is assured. Naturally you do one at a time and replace (and tension) the shroud before moving on to the next one. We picked out all the old caulk with dental picks before rebedding the chainplates. It's not at all difficult ... nice to have chainplates that don't leak. Regards, Gary Kunkel

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link. Not sure if anyone looked at it but they suggest just removing the plate and rebedding....I am thinking the entire base should come out and the srews that hold in the backing plate should also be rebed. Am I over-thinking this? Wouldn't those screw heads coming through the deck that support the backing plate leak as well? Thanks - Rob

I agree with Rob

In the link, all he did was put a layer of bedding compound on top of the older compound. He did not re-bed the chainplate. If one wants to go the all of the trouble of doing half the job, take the time to do it right. He did not even rebet the two machine screws that hold the underside of the chainplate to the deck, which are just as susceptible to leaks as the cover.

Rob, the answer is yes but

The part that leaks is the part he rebedded. The screw part is more protected and ony needs to be rebedded every 10 years or more.
