Rebedding stanchions

I need to rebed the stanchions on my 272. They currently have a pink rubber gasket between the stanchion pad and the deck that appears to be original. I have read somewhere here that a gasket material available in auto stores is the thing to use to replace this gasket. Any specifics as to type of material I need to ask for at the auto store besides "gasket material"? Is it neoprene? What thinkness is recommended? Any recommendations on doing this job would also be appreciatied.Thanks in advance.Frank

Stanchion Gaskets?

This question has come up before and I'm a bit puzzled about this gasket. Was the idea to circumvent usual bedding procedures or to enhance them? When did gaskets become available in O'Day boats and on what models?My only concern about them is that it might "fool" someone into thinking that this is all thats needed to completely seal the through bolt holes as they penetrate the deck for the life of the boat. Neoprene is not a good material, especially if the edge is exposed to weathering and UV light. In addition, rubber breaks down quickly in under normal atmospheric ozone levels. Just curious? I think I'd stick with 4200

Frank -The gasket idea doesn't appeal to me - particuarly in neoprene. As Don points out it will break down very quickly. Have a look at the straps on a windsurfer that's been left outside a season if you want to see for youself.I would countersink the holes and bed like everybody else does.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Gaskets

I purchased a 1987 272 five years ago noting a few deck leaks needing correction. The O'Day owner's manual received with the boat clearly specified the use of gaskets with the stanchions. I purchased a standard sheet of gasket material from the local automative parts store. All stanchions were removed, cleaned, and installed with the gaskets and standard caulking. No leaks experienced since doing this maintenance. And no streaking either.
