Rebedding Stanchion's????

What is the current thinking in regards to rebedding stanchions on my '83 H27??? Some people on the dock have mentioned silicone due to the fact that stress is always being placed on stanchions and thus there is some flexibility with silicone....I have not had stanchions on prior boats so I thought I would see what the wise have to say.:neutral:

Hopefully the wise will chime in too. From my perspective, if your stanchions have never been done in 25 years, it's probably a safe bet you have some water penetration already. If not, you are either very lucky or it's about to happen.

Silicone will work albeit messy and a recipe for later problems. Lifecaulk would be preferable or as an alternative, butyl strips would work as well if you are careful and properly seal any screws

I agree with Don. Use a good product like Life Caulk and it will last for many years. Be sure to do some inspection before rebedding the units.

On a related note, if you do see some defects in the core from water intrusion, you should plan on digging that out and use thickened epoxy to repair the damage, then redrill the holes and reinstall the stantions w/ Lifecaulk. Do a search on that subject for some really good discussions on how.
