I am planning to rebed stanchions with no direct access below deck due to a glued head liner. Several questions 1) What is the best method to access thru the headliner and then cover up the hole? I have not found any access covers other than the Beckson deck covers which appear to be overkill for the task. Any other simpler plates avialable for interior work? 2) What do I do if I run into the situation where the deck bolts are screwed into a tapped plate epoxied in place in the deck? Someone mentioned on my model this is likely. ie no bolts with nuts -simply a tapped plate. 3) Preferences re bedding compound based on the approach to the task? Thanks all.

You failed to mention what your boat is (make/model) and if it has a solid (fiberglass etc) headliner or a fabric (normally vinyl)..or some combination of both.On my Lancer several of the Stancions were concealed behind a fabric headliner..inspection of the ones I could access revealed the nuts were fiberglassed in place..soI just removed the bolts and fitting,cleaned it all up -filled the void with Silk-A-Flex and put it all back together.My worry was that the bolts might come loose and I not be able to reattatch but I worried in vain as all went well.ALSO,I've done several projects withy the Silk-A-Flex..and had great results..better than silicone or 4200 or even 5200.Give it a try,you'll love the stuff. Wood makes nice cover plates.
I am a little charry about turning a bolt covered with bedding compound, it scrapes it off. I prefer to insert the bolt in the stanchion, apply the bedding compound then insert the bolts into the holes and tighten the nuts while somebody is holding the bolts. I also like very substantial backing plates.

Thanks for the comments. The boat is a Hunter 340 yr 2001 with fibreglass liner covered in vinyl fabric. On closer inspection of 2 of the loosest stanchions there does not appear to be even a glassed-in tapped plate or if there was.... it is gone in both cases. The 2 bolts on each are freestanding ie totally loose, anchored to nothing! having been simply 'glued'in place with a compound of some sort by the previous owner. The only real holding for the stanchions comes from 2 screws anchoring 2 other feet to the deck. Of 4 crews only 2 are holding and these are not primary lead bearing bolts. I will need to open access points to each stnachion thru the liner and create a new system with plates, bolts and nuts. The biggest issue is the lack of access to build this from below.
