Hello, My mast was leaking into the cabin so I replaced the boot and it was still leaking just as bad. There are slots for bails such as the one for the boom vang all around the mast collar. Thinking that water will puddle in there and leak down I filled those with 5200 and it is still leaking. I suppose I have to rebed the collar and my question is; can I rebed it with the mast installed or do I need to remove the mast ? I appreciate your replies. Thanks Jules s/v Providendia Oday 39

Mast collar rebedded

Hello Jules, We are in the final stages of a repair project on an O'Day 34 and perhaps our work is similar to what you are asking about. Our mast(keel stepped) was off the boat when we removed and rebedded the mask collar. It was held by three thru bolts into the cabin top and three or four screws that were only about one inch long. It should be removable with the mast in place. We cut loose the old bedding by tapping a painter's tool under the collar and along the surface of the cabin top non-skid. Be cautious and tap the tool in a bit then move to another spot nearby to avoid the possibility of cracking the collar. If the bedding is leaking it should give way fairly easily because of water intrusion. We rebedded with 3M 4200 and will have the mast stepped on Wednesday. Best Wishes, Phil & Eileen (Day Dream in upper Chesapeake Bay)
