I purchased a 1985 28 O'Day last year and think some of the stanchions are leaking. There's a piece of rubber between the deck and the stanchion which appears to have dried out. Don't see the bolts on the inside so suspect the liner covers them. How do I remove the stanchion to rebed it? Are they screwed to the deck or bolted? Any help will be appreciated. Vern

They are bolted.

Vern, Welcome to the O'28 club. She is a great boat and I'm sure that you'l have many enjoyable times on her. One of your not so enjoyable times will be getting to some of the stanchion bolts. They are all through bolted to under the rail and some of them are a real bear to get at. I had to custom bend a box end wrench to make life easier. Just take your time and have a beer when things seem impossible. PM

A drill with a hole saw and dremel tool with a

cutting blade are the only way I have been able to get to a couple of the stanchion nuts on my O'Day 31. Not fun!

what I did on my 32

Was to locate the exact location of the stanchion inside and took a 2" hole saw and drilled the cabin liner out with two holes side by side so I could access the nuts and get a backing plate inside, getting to the nuts with wrench's,sockets and custom bent tools didn't work on all of them so what did work like a charm was a Craftsman flex head racheting box wrench's (I use them all the time now) To cover the holes I found some plastic that match's the liner pretty close to color and made 3X5 covers and screwed them over the holes. BTW I installed standard 1/4 nuts cause I was able to spin them on pretty easy with my finger then after the caulking dried a couple days later I snugged them up tight and then installed nylock nuts over them.

Big difference

Than the weeny washers ODay had as original, they were bent from stress, I walked into my buddys metal fab shop and found that stainless on the rack, 2 hours later new backing plates
