reasons for not getting an 8 hp outboard?

txtowman: I own and have used both 4 and 2 stroke motors for many years and have never noticed any difference in running 10% ethanol in them. They both will gum up their carbs if left sitting without running out the gas. Otherwise, they perform equally lousy on it! Chief
I started with an 8 pitch prop on my Tohatsu 4 stroke 6hp and while it moved the boat well and economically (hull speed at half throttle) it was no good for slow speed maneuvering so I went to a 6 inch pitch prop which is great in slow, stopping and backing but causes the motor to run louder at speed because of higher rpms.
This is an issue for my boat where the OB is in a notch in the transom. For me a 7 inch pitch may be the best solution.

merlin: Why not use a 4 blade? Thats what the 25", 2013 Tohatsu 9.8hp comes with for sailboats. Chief
I like that but when I looked at both tohasu parts and defender they only show the 4 blade for the 8 and 9.8 motors. The 6 is the same as the 4 and 5.
Guess I could contact tohatsu and find out from them if the hub is the same. the 3 blade is 8.375" and the 4 blade is 8.7" diameter so the clearance should be ok.

I would also gladly pay the price to get ethanol-free gas. We are located on Lake Michigan, just south of the Wisconsin/Illinois border, and have yet to find a gas station or fuel dock in the area that sells non-ethanol gas.
Check out your local airport by 5gal of 100LL no alcohol with a very low led content. I use it in a 87 Honda 7.5 works fine.

We sail on Lake Michigan between Illinois/Wisconsin border. I would GLADLY bear the extra expense of purchasing ethanol-free fuel, if I could find it.
In lieu of ethanol-free availability, we keep as little fuel in the tank as needed. We always add marine stabilizer as well as purchase and keep a fresh gallon of gas(usually Shell) aboard just in case. At the end of the day, if not used, the fresh gas goes into my car's gas tank for the ride home. This season I plan to make it a point to disconnect the gas line and run out any leftover fuel from the carb when I know we will not be back for a few days.
