Rear ports above transom

When I bought my 7.3 I couldn't figure out what these holes were for at the top of the transom. Still don't know. What are they supposed to do? Should I plug them up? I've refinished the wood cap, but it seems like I shouldn't have two big holes for water and stuff to get into the hull. I have an outboard motor not an inboard.

They are ventilation for the boat, specifically the engine compartment, as you surmised. If you close them up, on mind one faces forward and the other aft, you may get more mildew inside.

I'd just go have a look! Its your boat, right?? ;^)

She is 30+ years old and probably had several owners. People tinker with boats. No one can say with 100% certainty what you will find.

Ooops, sorry, I meant to ask if they "should" have some sort of tubing extending down, or just the open vent holes at the top?

on mine one has a vent hose going to the engine compartment ...the other has no hose just lets air inside the hull the one with the hose lets out the fumes in the bilge

Just ports as I recall. Active ventilation is required for gas engines and early 9.2s sometimes had A4s in them.
