I probably shouldn't post this here, but just for the two wheel gear heads on the board. A friend of mine, who is the son of a very good friend of mine, one Willie McCoy, has won the
Springfield Mile. You gear heads know how big a deal this is, and for the non gear heads, it is a very big deal.

Flat trackin, crazy speeds, throwin it sideways all that good stuff.....yes? Huge fan, used to watch it when televised all the time. Had a service manager at a bike shop I used to wrench at that raced and then his son after him. His son blew through the bails at a mile track and sustained some brain trauma. A tough sport not for the faint of heart. A huge acheivement, on top of the world he must be.

To keep it related to sailing: As a former off road speed junkie for over 25yrs it'd be an interesting study in how a guy who used to thrive on speed at the ragged edge and personally thought nothing of riding on the back wheel at over 60+mph through terrain you'd struggle to simply walk in can now find satisfaction in a sailboat that tops out at well under 10mph.

The old feeling of youthful immortality, the speed, the smells, the constant rush. Now replaced by aching pangs reminding me I'm not immortal and finding myself interested in a sport that uses a wildly complex machine with relatively no speed, the smells of the open sea, the infinite peace of a long run down the coast.

I guess I've just answered my own question.....:)

The flat track guys running at 100+mph is truly wild and yes winning Springfield is a huge deal especially appreciated by anyone who's tried anything remotely close to it(in a time gone by).

is funny how racing cars and motorcycles and sporty cars all go so well with sailboats and sailboating.

Nice post soling

I am an ex flat tracker, and it was extremely difficult for me to quit. Even after I was way too old, and no longer very competitive. The rush and butterflies on the start line are not understandable for anyone who has not been there. Going to a sailboat is a life change.
I would also add that this is certainly an outstanding accomplishment for Willie. He is truly a privateer. Builds his own engines, is his own tuner, and does his own chassis and suspension setup. He also drives himself to the races, with the bike in the back of his van.

That statement reminded me of the movie The World's Fastest Indian......story about Burt Munro who set the land-speed world record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967.

yes and with all that he is running on adrinilen 24/7 ....he will be better for it as now days the sponsers are spoiling a lot of the racers and they will have no idea how to get going when the ride is pulled out from under them....
not like the dearl dovels, rodger remans and bart markels of yesterday....
