Since the U.S. 1 cent coin is made of zinc sandwiched between copper I'm going to try using a bag of pennies as a sacrificial zinc anode on my sailboat. If you have tried this how did it work for you ?

How will you attach them?

For this to even have the potential of working, you would need to electrically connect the pennies to whatever you are trying to protect, the strut or the prop shaft. I hate to think of the vibrations you'll get with a bag of pennies strapped to the shaft.

I heard if you tape 10$ silver certificates to the prop shaft it will protect you. red

Warren,

Many thanks for that link. What a great spot. I may actually give their bottom paint a try.

You're talking about spending perhaps $12 for a new zinc to save equiptment costing $5000 or more to replace. Why screw around with pennies in a bag or however you might attach then. I think the phrase "penny wise and dollar foolish" was coined for you.

This is a joke, right? If not, I would really appreciate pictures I can show around the marina

I'm not sure I'd reject this so quickly.
If you took ,say, 50 (post 1982) zinc pennies... put them in a jig in a drill press and drilled a small hole thru the entire "roll"... repeated that with 3 or 4 "rolls" ... then ran a bare copper wire thru the holes in all the pennies ... how would that be any different than buying a made up zinc fish???
Maybe a little trouble, and you'd need a drill press to drill all the pennies quickly, but....

1. size
2. waste of time
3. copper won't erode exposing the zinc
4. it isn't pure zinc
5. never achieve a good electrical bond
6. it's a joke

Are you CRAZY? Do you know how much pennies cost these days

Another thing to note just in passing. I'm not 100% sure of this fact but I thought it is illegal to destroy US currency.

This post reminds me of a story my granddad told me years ago. Short story.
While at the lumberyard one morning a guy was buying several brick for a small repair job. He asked for 12 brick to be loaded in the back of his pick-up. After they were loaded, the sales man said if you buy 50 brick they are even cheaper. The guy said OK load'em up. After loading the 50 brick the salesman said to the guy you do know that if you buy 100 bricks they get even cheaper. The guy says OK load'em up. After loading the 100 bricks the salesman says you do know if you buy 500 they get even cheaper. The guy needing to get home, says to the salesman just keep loading'em till they're free.

Keep it up,
Ctskip

Maybe I should use zinc coated chain link fence instead of pennies ?

1. size .... 200 pennys w/ copper wire thru them would be rather smaller than typical zinc fish

2. waste of time ... perhaps, & granted it's would be "mickey mouse"

3. copper won't erode exposing the zinc ... zinc would be exposed in the central hole of each penny, providing significant total zinc surface area which would increase as the zinc underwent electrolysis inside the copper plating of each penny.

4. it isn't pure zinc ... 1982–present* 97.5% zinc core, 2.5% copper plating

5. never achieve a good electrical bond ... why not ????

6. it's a joke ... probably so, but for $2.00 worth of penny s, a piece of wire, and 10 minutes time ( w/ a drill press) ... it sure beats $42.99 for a zinc fish at WM

OK, it probably would be a wast of time...but, why shouldn't a few hundred (copper clad, zinc) pennys, (w/ ~ 3/16" holes drilled in the center of each), strung along (within the loop of) a piece of copper wire which suspends them in the water, not function as a sacrificial zinc anode?

why not melt them and cast them into a mold that has a copper wire in it, like a jumper wire from a car joint. Zinc melts at a pretty low temperature so this would not be hard to do at all, plus it will give you good reason to stop and pick up pennies you see on the ground. You could make a mold like a fish with a milling machine, it would be very easy. I bet you could make them for 5 bucks, sell them for 25 buck and undercut the competition to get all the market share.
