Hunter 420 Passage San Diego
I have noticed that the lack of a real head is an issue for many owners of smaller Hunters. As part of a major renovation of my 1974 Hunter 25 I installed a real head with no structural modifications. I suspect other Hunter models could be similarly modified. Any thoughts or experiences from other people? My out-of-pocket cost was about $300. Cheaper than buying a new boat just to get a real head.

CAN THIS BE DONE ON A H-20

CAN YOU TELL US WHAT IS INVOLVED AND WHAT DO YOU GET FOR $300.00 IT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD WINTER PROJECT.

The cost--and the issues--involved

It's possible to put a "real" head on just about any boat of any size...it all depends upon how much storage space you're willing to give up, and how much privacy you can do without. Unless it's necessary to create access to space for a holding tank, there shouldn't be any need for any structural work. Parts needed: the toilet, a 3/4" intake thru-hull and seacock, a holding tank, some hose, a vent thru-hull, and deck pumpout fitting. Cost depends upon which toilet, what size holding tank, and whether you do the work yourself, but I'd figure on a minum of $300 for parts alone. 25' is right at the "tipover point" for choosing between a portapotty or a head and holding tank. The "pumpable" portapotties hold 5.5 gallons, and use so little flush water that they offer the equivilant number of flushes to a "real" head and about a 12-15 gallon holding tank... Since the total cost is only a little over $100--vs at least $300--there's nothing to be gained--in fact, you lose capacity--by installing a head and only a 5-6 gallon tank...and since storage space is in such short supply on boats smaller than 25', it really doesn't make much since to fill it up with a tank large enough to give you any appreciable added capacity. It's also important to remember that a "real" head becomes another piece of equipment that has to be maintained...added expense. So our advice is: under 25'...pumpable portapotty. Over 25', head & holding tank...at 25' it depends upon how much you need a "real" head to feel like you own a "real" boat.

No More Porta Pottie

I agree that you may be limited to 10 -15 gallon holding tank which may only hold the same number of flushes as a 5.5 porti porta potties, but the ability to do direct discharge or empty the hold tank via a macerator outside the 3 mile limit in the ocean is worth the $300.00 to me.

Everyone has different needs...

And not many people spend that much time 3 miles or more out to sea in a boat under 25'...the vast majority of small boat owners are on inland or other protected waters such as the Chesapeake, where direct discharge or tank dumping is illegal. However, there's no reason why you couldn't install a y-valve and macerator in the pumpout line for a pumpable portapotty (or just pull a little tank out and pour it over the side) to dump the tank at sea if you'd rather use your limited storage space for storing something besides a holding tank. But to each his own...a few years ago I sold a Hunter dealer in AL a macerating electric toilet, a holding tank AND a Lectra/San to be installed on a doctor's new 25' Hunter. I'm still wondering where, after cramming all that into it, they found room for the batteries he was gonna need to power everything.

My experience

When I began looking for my boat, one of my criterion was a "real" head. I'd spent too much time camping, etc & had no desire for a porta-potty. That was one reason why I chose the C27 over the C25. It's been 3 years and I've never used that head once! I use my boat primarily for day sailing and our marina has some really nice "facilities" and I never wanted to pump out the holding tank after just a couple uses. Consequently, I have always had people "go" before we take off. Now I'm afraid to use it cuz it's just been sitting, without lube, etc for 3 years. I'll probably have to go buy a new one before using it cuz it'd probably leak like a seive (ick!). Instead of shelling out the $100 for a head I never use, I continue with my sad little program. If I had it to do again, I'd probably use the head more just to keep it in good order, but more to the point, I think now I'd rather have the stupid porta-potty! Easier to maintain, no more problems in pumping, and uses a LOT less space. It's strange that something that was so important to me at the time has become so inconsequential now. Just my thoughts & experience. LaDonna
