I'm looking at a '79 Catalina 27. The broker says she was last painted in '96, Last hauled out in '98. Most likely never left the river (Columbia). Would I be right in guessing she'd be due for a new application of antifouling paint? TIA

Timne for paint

IF it was last painted in 96, it is no doubt time for paint. I've got a 96 that was painted in 98 and there was not much of the bottom paint left when I had it hauled a month ago. But the good news it that the yard didn't find a single bubble or defect in the hull or the gel coat. These boats are built well. It isn't a good idea to wait. Tom

Absolutely

I just had mine hauled and painted. Had not been painted in over 10 years, most likely longer than that. I got real lucky - almost no blisters. My friends up North paint their boats every spring - not a bad idea. Better, more expensive bottom paint like Interlux Micron CSC or Petit Trinidad will let you go longer, but it is a trade off on cost versus time between paintings. Practical Sailor had a great article on this not too long ago. If you are in the market for a bottom job, I get ahold of that peice. Best of luck and enjoy that boat! I have a '79 C-27 and absolutley love her! Rob P.S. - just took some photos of mine while she was out of the water. You can find them in the Photo Forum.

What kind of paint??

You will need (or should) apply a paint similar to what is on there now. If it is a soft paint you can not apply a hard over it. You might be able to put a soft over a hard, but I would recommend a consistant type of paint..

Hi Dave! Who are you buying your boat thru? Don't forget to check out our local Catalina organization, the Columbia River All Catalina Association. Our website is www.columbiarivercatalina.org and it's a great way to hang out with other Catalina owners. Our meetings are the last Weds of each month

Hi LaDonna

Hi, I had no idea such an org existed. Broker is The Sailing Life, on Hayden Is. I will check out the www.columbiarivercatalina.org site ASAP. Thanks! PS I plan to dive myself to check out the hull Sunday, looking for monster blisters, if I can see anything through the weeds, how safe is the water 'round there?
