Our recently purchase H22 has no working lights. My husband will be making the repairs, or re-wiring. I wonder if this is a typical problem (1983 model year)? The boat has a depth and knotmeter that most likely don't work either. Can they be repaired, trouble shooting? Or should we just replace them? Where should we buy these items...for best price? Any other suggestions as we tackle this would be appreciated. I have read the archives and printed relevant info on using liquid electrical tape.

Basics first...

I don't know how far you've gotten into the wiring, so take this for what it's worth... first make sure that you've got power from the battery to the main bus on the back of the fuse panel. You can do this with either a lighted 12v circuit tester from an auto parts store, or with a voltage/multi meter. If you have power at the panel, then check the fuses and their sockets. If they're like mine, they're corroded beyond repair, and will have to be replaced. If they're OK, move on to the lightbulb socket (or instument) in question and check for voltage across the terminals. Lastly, make sure that the connections on the negative or ground side are solid. You could check for resistance between a negative lamp terminal and a good known ground like the mast step, and if there is very little or none, you know your ground (on that circuit at least) is good. If you think of electricity as hot water running through a system of valves (switches) and faucets (bulbs) and then drains (grounds), it may help. Do not however, attempt to run electricity through your sink. A book on 12v wiring will help greatly. Good luck, Bill

battery operated lights

I just moved up from a 22 ( non hunter ) that I had completely restored myself, to a h 27. I had ripped all the elecs out of the 22 and used clamp on lights fore and aft. This saved all the work and expense of rewiring, and I actually had no electric at all on the boat. For what we used the 22 for ( beaching with the kids ), it was ideal. You can keep the lights down below with 2 sets of fresh batteries.
