After 5 seasons its finally time to renew the cockpit table. The varnish is gone from many areas which are exposed to the sun, even though I keep it covered when not sailing. I'm hoping to be able to give it a light sanding and apply a new coat of varnish. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Strip it

My suggestion would be to completely strip the remaining finish, sand it with the grain using 220 grit, tack it off, then refinish it with 4 or 5 coats of a synthetic coating like Cetol, or one of the others on the market. Sounds like a good fall project. thake the table home, and do it in the garage, then it will be good to go in the Spring. After that project, just lightly sand the table and recoat at the beginning of each season.

Cetol is paint.

It would be a shame to paint a nice piece of wood. If you are going to do that you might as well give it some color. I would recommend scraping the surfaces using a cabinet scraper if you have one or a piece of glass (the edge makes a great varnish remover that can be sharpened by cutting a new edge) and refinish with a quality exterior grade, marine varnish.
