And the winner is... surprisingly... West Marine... Their prices were actually quite good for the lines I need. I got two rolls 600 feet each, one for halyards, and one for sheets and such. I originally wanted different colors for each line, but the price difference is substantial... as in very... so it's one color for halyards, and one color for control lines... Oh well....

Sadly Vela has no line in the size I need in stock...

My friend, there are literally dozens of sources. Trophy braid is great for sheets, but for halyards you want a much less stretchy line. That's why most of us will choose a dyneema cored line. Top of the chart race level line would be Samson Warpspeed II. NER has their version as does Yale and Marlow. A less expensive "club" level choice would the Samson MLX3...

So, if you have no particular allegiance to a particular suppier, ...the best thing to do is plug your particular size, brand and model into the search box and investigate some of the results. Here's some results for Fawcet Marine Supply selling 3/8" Samson Trophy Braid for .84/ft and 3/8" Samson MLX3 for $1.87. I recommend you decide the line you crave.... many good suggestions here. So that's a good place to start your investigations. Good luck, have fun.

p.s all the same color? wow! I don't think I could last that way, between training crew and keeping the cockpit organized, Anywhere you buy a full spool of line you're going to spend less per foot but of course you're going to end up with a lot of extra rope on the spool... just rememer, that is MONEY wrapped around the spool,

@Joe 3/8" is too small, I need 1/2". All the same color - well, it more important is to know where lines are. At night, do you think you will really see colors? Not so much. Far better to know what line is where - in fact you'd better know.... I'm not a training boat....

The amount of money I'll save by running one color, meaning I can buy a whole spool at a notably lower cost than buying different color lengths, is substantial. And no, I won't have extra rope on the spool - I've measured and know how much I need. It's not a WAG (wild a$$ guess)....

I mentioned the size as a reference for the particular source's pricing. The colors make it easier to communicate, especially to guests who may not be familiar with the boat. I sometimes sail at night, never though it was a disadvantage to have colored lines. I heartily agree with you about APS. I bought almost all my rigging line from them, great prices and even better service. I was thoroughly disappointed when they changed their profile. The good news was I found a replacement right here in San Diego with a similar one.
But... suit yourself... glad you found what you were looking for.

Yes, I realized that - funny thing though, almost everyone carries that 3/8 size. Go to 1/2 inch (12mm) and availability starts dropping fast.

We don't have an argument here. But I also don't need guests to run my boat. I'll single hand with guests aboard. The crew I'll be using must become totally familiar with all lines on the boat.

I never said it was a disadvantage. What I said was that at night you may not be able to see what the color is. And you need to know what line is where without having to rely on color.

Well, I'm only 50% there at the moment, but working on it...

Although meant for docking, these can be seen at night.

Reflective Dock Lines | West Marine

Perhaps West Marine has a source for your running rigging.

Jim...

PS: We had large ones for tossing to Dock Helpers.

So just coming back with the full circle here.

Folks - just sayin' - you best check out SBO for prices and availability for boat "stuff"... I just finalized the the purchase of my lines through SBO.

So I should have the Sampson MLX3 lines I'll use for my halyards in about a week - shipped right to my boat! Buying by the spool makes a HUGE difference in price! I needed an extra 150 feet beyond the 500 foot roll this line comes in, and even the price there from SBO is competitive.

A huge thank you to SBO and especially @Dave Groshong !
