Main halyard broke - nothing in the mast. Trying to figure a way to rig a new main halyard into the mast. Question: Is it best to run up the mast on a chair, splice the sheet to a piece of wire and run it down the mast? Once it's down, I guess I'll have to fish it out of the bottom with another wire? It's the first time I've done this so I am hoping someone can answer this from experience. email direct at kevinhinds1@yahoo.com Thanks

That's pretty much the drill...

.... tie a small fishing weight or piece of chain to the end of the messenger line. It's easier to remove the exit box first, then fish the line out, run it in the block, then replace the box, then you can tie or tape the messenger to new halyard, and reave it through. 1/8 or smaller twine for the messenger is fine, if it's a wire halyard use a rolling hitch with a tape cover to attach messenger, if it's rope, put a flemish eye on the end of the halyard and tie the messenger to it. If that's too much trouble, do like I do and just tape it. No problem.

An easier way to fish the messanger line out of the lower exit box is to use a flexible tape measure. Insert the middle of the tape into the box, and push it until it expands to the full circumferance of the mast. then when the messanger drops it will be caught in the loop. Pull out the tape and you have the messenger. Works every time. Good sailng Ron B
