Re-powering Irwin 42 Center Cockpit

I'm in the process of restoring a 1976 Irwin 42 Center Cockpit and planning to re-power with an Yanmar engine. My understanding is that the boat originally came with Perkins 4106 engines (approx 48 hp) and that they were a bit under powered. I understand many upgraded to the 4236 (75 hp). I want to install a Yanmar and would like to get some advice on best horse power. I've seen some 55 hp Yanmar for sale, but concerned that may not be quite enough power. Should I be focusing on 65 or 75 hp engines?

I plan to be a full time cruiser once the restoration is done.

Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

Steve

I'm interested in your repower efforts since I close this week on a new to me 1987 Irwin 43 center cockpit that was repowered 6 years ago with a Yanmar 4JH4-TE, 75 hp. Sea trial showed 8.4 kts at 3000 rpm and the PO estimates she gets 6+ kts at 2500 rpm while burning estimated 3/4 gph.

Malyea...... from what I have read, I think you have the hit the sweet spot with engine HP. 75 HP seems to be the right size for these boats. Steve

Well, unfortunately she's in NC and we're in GA - going to see her for the weekend coming up... First time aboard since we closed - but we both love her, planning significant upgrades and then an offshore delivery this fall to St Augustine. From there....bring me that horizon;-)
