Hi, We recently bought a 86 Catalina 27 and after getting all the paper work for it, we found that the name had been changed once before we bought it. My wife and I both like the boats original name better than the one it has now. We've heard (amongst the superstitious ones) that it is bad luck to change the name of a boat. So, is it bad luck to change the name back to the boats original name? Thanks...

go for it!

When I bought FIREWORKS I changed the name from Impulse. The seller said he first named it No regrets but that it looked funny on the transom so he changed it. I have had great luck with the boat and never gave it a second thought about changin names. But then again I don't believe in friday the 13th or Black cats crossing my path either. Change it if it makes you feel good!

Bad Luck?

I've heard that you must sink a boat before you can change the name. Maybe it is like a baptism. If so christening should suffice. There are alot of rumors about it. I have changed the name of a boat before, with no ill effects. Treat it as a new boat, which it is to you, christen it with a bottle and hold a celebration. It's part of the enjoyment of owning a boat. Enjoy your new vessel!

Renaming Ceremony

I checked out the denaming ceremony by Mr. Vigor on the 48 North website.(that take care of removing the old name). I had heard many years ago that to properly re-name a boat. One must locate a GOLD coin minted the same year the keel was laid (or laid-up) and place it underneath the mast with the head up and facing forward. Once this was done the proper christening was performed at the bow of the boat. Breaking the bottle against the bow makes a mess with plenty of glass chards around, so it was settled that the boat's bottle of champagne (it MUST have it's own bottle) can be opened and poured over the bow. The other bottle(s) of champagne are for the owner and guests at the christening party. This is supposed to remove any "bad luck" in the re-naming of the boat! Now, if this isn't true it sure sounds like a lot of fun and a ceremony of any kind just brings people closer together and makes the boat more "yours" than any thing I can think of. This is what sailing is all about, isn't it???? Please relate any other type of ceremony you might be aware of. Good Sailing, Capn' Odie

ReNaming

The only alteration to the Re-Naming ceremony I can think of would be to properly filter the champaign before spilling it on the boat. Have fun Ya'll John
