Re:MD6A Engine Temperature

My MD6A runs at 80 - 90 deg C on the temperature gauge and seems perfectly
happy at this (indicated) temp - the engine never seems unduly hot while
running or after a run of several hours. As 80 deg C is the straight up (ie
essentially midway) position for the needle on the dial I assume this is the
temperature it is designed to run at.

I thought that diesels didn't like to run too cool, so all this talk of
50deg C in previous posts is confusing me . . .

I have sailed a Vega with an MD6A that did run too hot - indicated 100 - 110
deg C and the cockpit sole got uncomfortably warm for bare feet. Once the
problem was solved (a kink in an over-long seawater inlet hose causing a
restriction) the temperature went back down to 80 deg C and all seemed well
again.

Hi Nick

Yes the correct temp is about 80 degrees Celcius. The temp is determined by
the
thermostat so if it is running cooler then this will indicate that either the
thermostat is stuck open or has been removed (usual state of affairs). Best
way
not to worry about the temp is to have an MD6A without a temp gauge then you
wont keep looking and worrying at it. Youw ill soon notice if it boils! The
gauges are great if you lkook at them every 30 seconds but whio in their right
mind goes sailing to stare at a gauge all day....

Ken preston's article is now on the VAGB website, a cracking good read
(http://www.albinvega.co.uk/www.albinvega.co.uk).

Thanks to Nick with all the help on the VAGB website. It certainly looks more
professional now days.
