Re-Installing Skeg

I have removed the Skeg from my Hunter 30 to repair a side to side movement. The 3/4 inch stainless pin on the bottom of the rudder is supposed to set in the bottom shoe of the skeg and help stabilize the two assemblies. The hole in the skeg is wobbled out to a figure 8, normal enough wear pattern, however I can not find any evidence of a bushing or sleave of any kind. Did this boat use a bronze bushing? or anything down there. I can make one from just about anything including delrin high strength plastic. The rudder post and assembly is very strong and secure. If anyone knows how it is supposed to be, I would appreciate it.

We lost our skeg earlier this year

We ground our boat this June and lost 4 inches of our skeg. We were able to motor home and left the boat for 1 week before it was motored 15 miles to a repair shop who lifted out. The damage (see photo) required the rebuilding of the skeg. The repair shop felt it would have to get a bushing made but lo and behold the bushing had not fallen off. You can just see it in the photo. It was stainless and resembled just pipe with a slight flair on the top end. Hope that helps

Mine was the same

just a small stainless tube with a slight flare around the top lip. Thin walls, and the flare was another wall thickness out. Did your skeg come off easily? Mine was impossible to get off and I'm wondering if a PO had re-bedded somehow as others here have said it was easy to get their skeg off. I had to saw mine off.

Skeg came off fairly easy

John, I crawled into the rear space and removed the 5 stainless bolts from the body into the skeg. It was still on strong with a very tough sealer, I used several wedges to seperate the skeg a milimeter at a time. I will put it back with 5200 polyurathane sealer, this stuff is strong and waterproof and does not loose it's flexibility.
