my wife and i plan a trip out to honolulu the 24th of feb to the 3rd of
march. i would be interested in getting a sail in while out there.. would be
willing to either charter a Vega for a couple of days, or just pay for the
gas (and food) on a daysail.... i owned vega 3176 which was purchased by
random luck, and sailed every weekend for 3 years straight.... best boat of
the size (imho)..... i sold her to a young man who sailed to ireland from the
chesapeke bay... if anyone runs into her i would appreciate hearing back from
the owners.... purchased an albin singoella that is sorely in need of tlc,
the previous owner changed the underwater configuration by cutting off the
skeg and installing a new rudder.... nether of which is suitable to the
boat.. so much work must be done... biggest problem i have with her is the
deck leaks though..
i opened a hobby store little over 5 years ago... we now have 2 locations and
are growing fast (insert plug here for The Lucky Frog 7030354-8018 Magic,
Pokemon, and Mage Knight) so i haven't seen the water or the boat for 5
years... in much need of some sailing hope there is someone in Hawaii that
want to do some sailing. :)
been keeping my hope alive by reading the Northern Magic stories... excellent
site if you haven't been to it.... Northern Magic.com

Hi Dan,

Just I've been thinking about how I could accomodate you.
Unfortunately the perpetually-under-construction Lealea needs new
cockpit hatches before I'll feel comfortable taking her out of the
harbor. I don't know if any of the other Hawaii Vega sailors might
be available. I know of only five, three on Oahu and one on Kauai.
Three of us on Oahu are on this list.

Give me a call when you get in town. (808) 831-2611 (business), (808)
228-3703 (cell) (808)225-7870 (home)
Aloha,

Chuck: thanks for the reply..... i would appreciate any information that
you have that would enhance our visit.... we are also in the stages of
booking our hotel room there... was thinking of maybe trying to stay aboard a
small sailboat in the harbor there... any thoughts of a small boat charter
co? something only locals would use? a shower at the dock is all we need....

Thanks

Dan,

There are no bareboat charters that I know of here. Probably has something to do with the sea conditions. This time of year we get REALLY big swells from the Northeast. For Example, today's marine forcast is East winds 25 to 30 kts, seas 18 to 22 ft. in the channels. Crewed day charters are of the "Cattlemaran" variety with 50 foot cats fitted with benches for the tourists. They beach the boats at Waikiki and load as many people as will fit on the benches then go out for half an hour.

I will check tonight when I go home to see if there are any private yachts in the Ala Wai that may be available.

As for hotels; My business visitors usually stay at the (Renaissance) Ilikai hotel (808-949-3811)which overlooks the Ala Wai yacht harbor. Rooms available for the time you will be here range from $199 (Ocean view with refrigerator and coffee maker) to $229 (With breakfast and a car from National). also overlooking the Ala Wai is the Hawaii Prince Hotel(808-956-1111). Newer and nicer than the Ilikai, rooms range from $210 to $265. All rooms are ocean view. The difference is that fifth floor rooms are $210 and tenth floor rooms are $235 etc. The higher up the higher the price. A few blocks away, there are hotels in the Outrigger chain with rooms from about $109 check http://www.outrigger.com/hotels/ The "Ohana" hotels under the Outrigger marque are the cheaper ones. The Ohana Waikiki Hobron is one block from the marina - no frills. We have stayed there when Lealea was in the yard.

Anything else I can help you with - feel free to ask.

Aloha,
