I am planning to replace the indoor outdoor carpet on my trailer bunks before I haul out the boat this year. (I plan on sailing until the end of October, so just thinking ahead) Debating between regular indoor/outdoor or a marine carpet. Do you have to glue the carpet down? What type of glue did others use? Of course I was going to use SS staples to tack it down. Would roofing nails be better? I hope I do not have to replace the wood, but will see what it looks like after i strip the bunks. s/v Winter Solace

Bunk Carpet and SS staples

I bought the bunk carpet at Boat/US (it's gray) and stapled it to the bunks. It took about 1/2 hr. I also replaced the bunks with new 12 ft long pressure-treated 2x6's (the old ones were in very bad shape). Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Outdoor Carpet from Home Depot

I also used pressure treated 2x6s. But I opted for standard outdoor/marine carpet from Home Depot. It was very rugged and very inexpensive. I attached the carpet to the bunks with SS staples. Be sure to use zinc-plated or SS carriage bolts, as well. Also inspect the bolts on the swiveling attachment plates, as mine were very corroded.

slicker material?

Has anybody used a slicker material so the boat will slide better when winching up to the front of the trailer? IE: rubber, thin wood strips, plastic rails of some kind..........would sure be easier cranking.

Son of a Gun....Slicker

We have a flat bottom scow that rides on a trailer with two carpeted runners. We keep a bottle of Son of a Gun... like Armor All and spray on the carpet after launching...it makes it alot easier to crank up later on....it should work for your boat too! Good luck Chris

Slicker Bunks

I just ordered some stuff called "Liquid Rollers" from West Marine that you spray on the bunks and let dry. It says, "Your bunk boards will perform like rollers." I'll let you know how it works once I try it (maybe next month). I was going to buy some of those "Trailer Glyde Sliks" from Fentress Marine but whenever I call their nr. 1 800 562 6004, I keep getting a modem instead of a voice. Jim Schaff s/v Morning Glory

BEWARE of making the bunkers slicker

Do NOT release the bow strap before the trailer is in the water. Slick works coming off the trailer too. Pretty damned embarassing to find this out at the ramp.

Amen to Beware

You will be suprised how fast a boat will move once on a ramp. I almost got killed by an idiot who did not lock the winch when backing down the ramp. This was a Pacific Seacraft Flicka and it was not damaged but I think it would have just about totaled your Hunter.

Joy dishwashing liquid

Don't know about the KWS trailer, but the bunks on my MagicTilt have to be submerged to get the boat on, so it's an easy matter to get the boat in the right position. Now, keeping it there as you try to pull forward out of the water is a whole 'nother story! I had always heard that a little bead of Joy on the aft end of each bunk works wonders. The boat will spread the Joy as she slides up onto the bunks. Rinsing afterwards with a little water will remove most of the Joy, so the boat shouldn't slide around. Peter H23 "Raven"

Not that much damage

The rudder assembly took the brunt of the punishment. I had a few hours of epoxy work, the aluminum 'plates' to a sheet metal shop for flattening, and a little hardware hammering and all was well. I saw the boat sliding back and was able to keep up with it with the trailer for support.

Dishwashing Detergent as a Bunk Lubricant

I concur with Peter, for my MagicTilt or any other trailer, just use dish soap. Put a thin bead on each bunk and spread before reversing the trailer into the water will give you all the lubricant you need. The residue that remains will help at the next launch.

Try Dish Soap Instead of Detergent

Try dish soap like Ivory instead of Detergent the amount would likely not make a difference but probably a better idea
