Re-bedding deck hardware - hunter 356

Good day,

I would like to re-bed all deck hardware on my 2002 356. Can anyone confirm if the stanchion bases are glassed in with backing plates / nuts? Do I need to remove any of the headliner to access the handrails, and genoa tracks etc?

the stanchion bases, handrails, genoa tracks and cabintop hardware like the stoppers all have threaded backing plates glassed into the deck in place of the core. The deck cleats and pulpit/pushpit are all thru bolted as is the bow hardware - anchor rollers, windlass, etc. you need to drop the hard headliner in the forward cabin to get to the fwd cleats. Get your bedding - butyl tape from Mainesail - it's the right stuff for this job

Thanks Chuckwayne, I will order the butyl tape but was also thinking about using 3M 4200 and the tape together. My fear with the butyl tape is that with having to screw the fasteners into the fixed backing plate it might spin / break apart seal. What's your thoughts about using both?

Don't use adhesive. Really. They shouldn't sell 4200 & 5200 to unsuspecting boaters. If the screws are on top of the bottom plate, as I suspect (another suspecting boater!!! ) they are, then over slather the butyl tape on the bottom of the screw head and turn all you need to. You remove the excess tape by wadding up a small roll of fresh tape and running it over the excess.

Thanks gentlemen. I'm going to order two rolls to be safe. Can you pack in the area that the fastener passes through and thread it around the fastener / screw as well? Can you over do it and in return cause a reverse effect?

yes you can - any excess will be squeezed out and you can trim it off
