Here is a very good link on re-packing a stuffing box. Opinion of moldable packing is on page 2. I will stick to conventional flax.

Not sure what the $65 dollar stuff is, but here is a modern version of packing.
Less friction than the old stuff but basically works the same. Its called
Graphtex Ultra GTU Shaft Packing

Graphite is the most noble metal on the galvanic series and is likely to promote corrosion of the shaft. Best to stick to flax.

I have been using flax packing more than fifty years and have had
no problems with it. I pump in a little water pump grease now and
then. There may be better packings but have never tried any being
happy with what i am using. I have herd complaints of shaft pitting
under carbon packing and I don't think the manufacturers recomend it
for marine use because of electrical conductivity and the fact that
it is more nobel as someone here said. I just pump in some grease
now and then. Most any marina yard boss wil tell you the same
thing. Doug

You guys better tell all those plumbers that have been using the stuff for years that the handles are going to corrode off of their gate valves"Douglas Pollard dougpol2@... [AlbinVega]" AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com wrote:

There is one heck of a lot of difference between a prop shaft that
goes to ground carrying Grounding current and a gate valve in a
surage system. I guess thats the reason we don't use plumbers to
install our Packing glands. Doug

Whatever you call it there have been many cases of corroded shafts. Flax works well and the price for enough to re-pack is about $3. It wears predictably and has no issues.
