Re: [AlbinVega] starter for MD-6b/Bunks

According to the Volvo Penta web site, that MD6B alternator is a 14V/60A, Part no. 3803260, Spare part no. 872235. The starter is Part No. 3803077, Spare part no. 838060.

Doing a google search for alternator part numbers gives:
http://store.wmjmarine.com/18-5939.html
http://ebasicpower.american-data.ne...GY&Store_Code=eBasicPower&Category_Code=VOL9A
(the above link is for 872235-7, not sure if the -7 makes a difference)

Looks like the going rate is about US$400.00

Didn't see any hits for either starter numbers.

If you can't find an auto shop to rebuild it, you might try asking around your local Volvo Penta dealers that provide service. You can look up the dealer network at
Volvo Penta | On land and at sea
if the phone book doesn't help.

As for your question about the super bunk. I think they were talking about adding a panel to fit between the seats in the main cabin. You would pad the board and end up with a very wide bed. I haven't heard if this was ever an original option. I've seen this mod written about in boat books. You want to make the panel removable and add fiddles to keep it in place.

Hi All
There is an MD6A running in a local marina with a chevy vega alternator by Delco. It is a self regulated GM alternator with a 60A output. He made a slight mod to the mounts when his alt went out away from home and he needed a quick rig and went with it. On GM alternators the main terminal on the rear goes to the battery. There are 2 other terminals on the case. #1 is voltage sense, jump that to main terminal on rear. #2 goes to ignition to disconnect the internal relay when key is off to prevent backflow. I looked at his install and thats my next alternator as it was an easy modification to get it in there.

He said it worked so well he never took it off, that was 13 years ago.

Claude

PS
Maybe I can round him up and get some close up shots of it.

Hi And thanks to all!
I'm at 13.23 with alternator which is at low end.
i'm researching a Chevy Vega alternater (Delco) and will go in that direction.
Claude if you can make the installation idiot proof I would be very gratefull.
Thanks!
Thanks to you too Chris for your input. are you still Solomans Isle.?
Hopefully I will do the Cheasapeake in Sept. (my old cruising grounds)
And make Baltimore's inner harbor before heading back to Oriental NC
My home port.
I bought the SV/Monkey In 2002 (changed the name to Puffin) and have been working on her ever since this will be my first extended cruise. 1 month.
I would love to visit with any Vega captains in the area. Plan to do eastern shore until St.
Michaels and then Annapolis , Rock Creek and the marina I kept my boat in till 81 when I left for Bahamas.
They say "you can't go home again" but I just want to do it once more while I am still able.
65 in August.!
All goes well, may do Bahamas again maybe Cuba if Bush eases up and before Castro dies and it becomes another Las Vegas
Thanks again and regards to all.

Hi Gianni,

If you come by Norfolk on your cruise, drop me a line (emai off listl) and maybe we can
meet up. I'm located at Willoughby Harbor marina (nice place to dock or drop an anchor),
not far from Milepost 0 of the Intercoastal Waterway (or are you planning to go the
"outside route"?)

Gianni,

Yep, the boat is at Calvert Marina in the Solomons area. It's about a 30 minute drive from house to boat. I could either visit with you here, if you plan to make a stop in this area, or I could easily cruise over to the other spots you listed below. Would also be interested in a group get together at one of the other ports, if any interest develops. Combi and exhaust were the only big items I had planned for this year, so the boat should be operable the rest of the summer. I'm saving up to do a paint job next year (topsides/deck). Then, finally, I can start concentrating on sailing gear.

Hi Chris
Sounds good!
Let's keep intouch.
Have you any Ideas where a grtoup could meet?
Onancock on VA's eastern shore is a pretty spot if harbor and or marinas are available.
I was in there in the 80's and loved it.
Best regards
