RE: [AlbinVega] repowering

Hello,

I am beginning to repower my Vega this summer, and have a question. You
mentioned replacing the stern tube. What did they replace it with? Bronze
or fiberglass? The tube on my boat is shot and that is my first step when I
get started. I have read that one can be fabricated from fiberglass.

Thanks,
Dave

Good afternoon Dave,
Have a look at www.vetus.nl under "propellor shafts"

They do nice systems (complete assemblies) for vessels like the Vega.

The outer tube is made of GRP (making glassing in easy) and the whole system
is described/imaged nicely. The shaft itself is made out of Remanit 4418 (a
form of stainless steel)and the outside bearing is made out of stainless
steel (+ rubber bearing inside) I have one of the rubber sleeve / seals
mounted, meaning no -traditional- stuffing box (!) It runs fine and needs
virtually no maintenance. The sleeve should -officially- be changed every
7-10 years. The whole assembly is lubricated with water from the outside
only (RPM is not that high and it's pretty small / low power anyway)in other
words: I don't feed water from engine or inlet to it. Just let water from
the prop-side enter it.

You can also order a free catalog online etc. etc. no I don't have
shares...:) at that website.
Success & best regards,
Hielke
