I see from the photos of your boat that you have a Yanmar 2GM20 installed. This is the same engine as installed on my boat. Do you have a primary filter from the diesel tank installed and if so where is it sited? Mine is situated under the cockpit floor behind the engine which is not a good place to have it if it needs cleaning at sea.

Dear Peter,

I have the Beta diesel, but I installed a primary filter and a raw water sea strainer under the starboard cockpit seat as far forward as possible. Very handy and accessible

My motor is actually a 2GMF 13hp, one of the early 2GMF's before the
20 ... still a great motor.
I have the original copper tank in the starboard locker, as my boat
used to have the Albin gas (petrol) engine.
I removed the old glass sediment bowl as it looked like a bit of a
hazard. At the top of the tank on the outlet I put a ball valve, then
a flexible hose leads down to a water separator/filter unit attached
to the bulkhead. It's easily accessable from the cockpit locker. From
there a flexible hose carries on up to the small filter attached to
the engine. I suspect your tank is down in the bilge?

It's not usually a good idea to copper tanks for diesel fuel, are there not
known corrosion problems?

Thanks for the description it is a great help. I have a Series 3 with a stainless tank in the floor in the forward part of the port cockpit locker. The arrangement you describe seems to be the best solution for me just to move the filter from under the cockpit floor into the port locker above the tank but still below the level of the filter on the engine.

Thanks for the 'heads-up'.
Checking on the internet I found lots of e-pinions, but no concrete
evidence agaist a copper/diesel combination.
It depends on what other metals make up the alloy, such as nickel.
This tank, up high in a well-ventilated environment, has stood up
well for 27 years. I had it out and re-soldered a couple of the fuel
fittings. It was very clean inside ... maybe the copper is a natural
biocide for those dreaded Diesel microbes.
If it ever does spring a leak I'll replace it with a plastic one, but
until then, "If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it".

As a side note, I once almost bought a boat that had wood/fiberglass
gasoline tanks. After that discovery I withdrew my offer!
