Re: [AlbinVega] HELP Combi

Wilhelm,
Thanks for the advice. I tried it the other way around (blocking the flywheel, trying to turn wrench) but I end the day defeated. I tried to find some pipe to use as a big lever (Lever was Steve's suggestion) on the wrench, but after waiting 30 minutes for some help at the local home hardware place (Lowe's), I left in disgust (never did get help). I went into an auto store on the way home, and although they didn't have anything to help me, the clerk showed me how to lock two large wrenches together. So with the larger leverage, I hope to try again tomorrow.

So far the pictures and instructions with the Combi Kit have been clear. If I end up needing more details, I'll certainly call on you to send me those pages. But for now, don't worry about them.

Chris--what are you removing?? Can you use a torch? If so, heat only one side of the nut red hot then use wrench. Make sure you pull in the correct rotation. jorgen

Where are you working on the boat? Anynear the east coast? I am currently in Rhode Island working on a 45' aft cabin motor yacht I bought. I have been rebuilding both engines, then will sail her a few hundred miles down to Virginia and home. If you are along the way I would be glad to stop and help. Still have not bought another Vega, this baby has tied me up every day for 3 weeks but i'm testing her tomarrow, almost done.

Let me know if I can help.

I'll keep the torch idea in reserve. I don't have any experience with using a torch and not sure that it wouldn't do damage. If it comes to that, I'll probably ask the boat yard to do that for me. The nut that I'm trying to remove is the clamp nut, number 14, that is exposed when you pull back the combi box housing, number 15. Numbers from the exploded view shown in combi instructions shown in files section.

Looks like we're neighbors, I keep my boats about 10 miles away. I will be underway mon or tue and have wireless internet on the boat. I have time to kill when I get there and dont mind helping out if you can use me.

The nut is loose! (No not me). I used a second wrench as a lever as demonstrated by the auto parts clerk. I locked the flywheel in place. I found a good spot to get the wrench on the nut. I locked the second wrench on the first one, then I wedged myself in the cockpit well. It took both arms on the wrench as well as most of my upper body weight leaning on the wrenches to finally break it loose. Thanks for all the speedy replies with advice and offers of help.

You know what's coming next right? Now that the clamping nut is off, I need to pull the shaft back. The instructions say to drive the shaft forward slightly to release the clamping rings. I was able to drive the shaft forward about 2 mm. I'm not sure if this is enough. Are there any telltales when the clamping ring is released? Next I tried to lever the shaft back. I think I need to move it back far enough to be able to remove the clamp rings and nut. However, I'm not having much success at being able to lever the shaft back. Any ideas?

For those of you who have ended up cutting the shaft to remove it from the boat. Where did you cut it? Did you just make a cut or did you cut out a section? After cutting, is it any easier to remove the stub from the combi unit? What did you cut it with? Any details/experiences would be appreciated.

Hi chris
if I'm not mistaken when I installed my engine and puller gear(combi) I drove the nut attached foward and when off released the woodruff ke the shaft was then able to be moved back and out of the gear The back of the gear might need to be taken off I'm tryinmg to remember..\
I was out of the water at the time and pulled the shaft out a good distance to greaseit.

I have never taken out the shaft on a combi, but I have used a slide hammer
to get the shaft out on other systems. Is that a possible way. If you cut
the shaft you will not have anything left to pull on except the shaft. The
slide hammer will grip the nut on the end of the shaft.
All the best;

Hi Gianni,

It seems that something in the combi is holding tight to the shaft. I can rotate the blades and can see the control tube moving in/out of the stern bearing, so it appears loose there. I loosened the stuffing box, so that shouldn't be holding it. The back case of the combi (#15) is off. So nothing in there should be holding it. I wonder if I should remove the 4 hex bolts (#12) that is holding plate (#10) to plate (#2). I might be able to see what is holding the shaft. All numbers refer to the first exploded picture in combi instructions from files section at yahoo.

Robert,
I will check with the boat yard monday and see if they have one I can use. If not, I'll check the local hardware store for one. I hammered and pryed on that prop boss for quite awhile. I would think that if the shaft was going to come loose, It would have budged a tiny bit. But I don't think I made any difference. I think something is still holding tight to the shaft in the combi.

Hi Chris

It is teh clamping rings taht are holding teh shaft. If you cut teh shaft then you will need a brand new shaft which will cost a fortune! I have sent you an email to explain how to loosen the stubborn rings. Space off the boss holding the shaft and clamping nut by half inch by loosening the allen bolts that hold the boss to the rear of the engine. Oncespaced off the shaft can be hit on the prop and the rings will release. This method has never failed yet! It is my secret method that I have had to use twice.

Hope thsi helps..
