Hi Walt,

Yes, I've thought about a family vacation on the Sacramento Delta--we're usually looking for warmth and water not too far away. I read an article and saw some pictures in Latitude 38 magazine that looked appealing! A Vega rendezvous could be wonderful!

Have you (or anyone else in the group) actually cruised the Delta? How wide is it? Is there room to actually sail, or is it mainly river channels that require long or frequent motoring? I don't like to do a lot of motoring if I can help it.

Hi Nathan, Our port is completely rebuilt after being COMPLETELY destroyed by the tsunami. Lyric is in Brookings because it is a nicer place to be. Slips are about half the price, locked gates and less of a low life presence. Both ports have a significant commercial fishing presence and Crescent City puts them first in accessibility on the docks. Brookings has two separate areas for the commercial and pleasure craft. There is some intermingling of the two. Brookings did take a considerable hit during the Tsunami (30 to 40% destroyed) and has also completely recovered.
I'm sure that there are a number of other Vegas in the area and I think there would be enough interest for a rendezvous. My preference would be the Sacramento Delta. It's boater friendly and anchoring out is not a problem in most areas. It's also fresh water and warm enough for swimming. Marina slips in the bay area would probably be kind of costly.
Judy and I are planning on making the pacific northwest next summer but I'd like to do both.

Nathan, I married my wife in the Delta. It was as captain of the vessel and good for the duration of the voyage. That was close to 20 years ago. About 13 years ago we made it formal in San Diego. Some sailing but a lot of the waterways are narrow. The appeal is sunshine and warm fresh water. The detractors are the jet skis and the powerboats. A fairly strong marine law enforcement presence keeps most of them fairly sober and civil. If you go online to Latitude 38 and do a search you will get over 1500 hits for the Delta. I've made 3 trips to the Delta and was able to sail fairly well going
up but motored back. Be careful rounding bends. Don't try to buck the
tide. I advise people not to fly a spinnaker anywhere near the
Carquinez Strait. I lived in Napa for a long time.....Actually...Napa
Valley Marina might be a good rendezvous site. Sailing is great but it
is still saltwater. Would need to figure out transportation to town
though... 4+ hours closer than the Delta. Anchor out or stay at the
Marina. Probably the reason I didn't go up the Delta more often was
that there wasn't much more to do than around Napa. The Delta is
pretty neat though. Mostly tules with brush and some trees. Can't
really get off the boat.
