For a lighter interior, white oak looks great finished with a clear
satin varnish. So does ash, but the oak has more "Character" in the
grain IMO. Cherry looks great too. For exterior grab rails, the only
advantage to teak is that it can be left unfinished for quite a while
without damage. If finished with a good sealant, varnish or paint,
most hardwoods will work fine. Mahogany, sapele, oak or even douglas
fir, if you're going to paint it, would be OK. I think.

I saw a boat the other day that had replaced the teak grab rails with
stainless steel ones. They looked pretty good. Although not as nice
looking as teak, they're a lot stronger than my old thinning teak
ones, and never need varnishing. Sounds like a good project for the
future.

Has anyone moved the inside grab rails to the outside? Seems possible and my inside rails are like new after 34 years while the outside ones are getting somewhat thin.

I did that and it has worked very well.

Hans,
That thought had occured to me, too. I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Possible but the inside rails attach with long bronze screws. They go
through the cabin top and into the outside rails. Good luck getting them
off. I had a heck of a time. We did stainless on the outside when we replace
them. Very pleased with the results. Walt

We were thinking of going to stainless as well. What about the metal
getting too hot to handle in the sun?

Thanks Steve,

I may just do that and then think about what to do inside, seems there may be more options inside.
I'm aware that you have, or had, the correct fit replacements available, and that might be an option. It's a pretty expensive project anyway I look at it, but in the end I might just make my own from scratch, as I did with replacement dowels for my cleats.

On another subject, any chance there may be pictures of anchor placements for the twin bow rollers. As you may remember, I installed the replacement several years ago but have not found a really satisfactory anchor/bow roller combination that wont damage the hull at the bow.

Thanks,

I too had problems getting out the old bronze screws and broke a couple of
them. I've replaced them with SS screws.

Wrap it with 1/8 inch or thinner polyester or cotton braid and put a
couple of turk's heads to finish the ends. Then paint the wrapping
white to seal it and keep it looking sharp. Better grip and cool to
the hands. Looks nautical as all get out too.

I just made new handrails for my albin motorsailor. They are modular
and come from a company called Teakflex. nice product. also the teak
dowel that is used for the hand rail is about 1/8" smaller than the
cleats on a vega. I think they can be purchased separately.

I worried about that also. It never happened while we were in Mexico though.
I guess since only part of the metal is in the sun at any given time the
part thats not in the sun radiates the heat.

Hello again, I have a later model Vega with the Proctor spar (aluminum
color - not gold). I am wondering if anyone knows if this mast was
originally anodized or simply coated with a shellac? Has anyone had any
success re-coating, painting, or anodizing this kind of spar? Thanks,

I have the same mast I think Trevor; Proctor. Mine is clear anodized
but scuffed a bit from the original wire/rope halyards (Since
replaced with all rope halyards). I was advised to leave it alone as
long as possible, much like with gelcoat, and paint it only when it
was absolutely necessary with Awlgrip after thorough surface
preparation and priming.

Trevor-
I have a Proctor mast that is clear, however I think that it has faded
from the sun because my boom is gold. Protected from the sun by the
sail cover.
