RE: [AlbinVega] Digest Number 1570

I installed one (S/L Anchorman) a couple of decades ago and didn't
bother using it for the first ten of those years - I could haul the
anchor by hand quickly enough.

For the last ten years my back has been playing up and the windlass
has been essential.

If you are young and fit (and foolish?) you probably don't need a
windlass on a Vega. If you have any lightweight crew then a windlass
is essential if you want them to pull their weight (and more). If you
will be cruising in areas with lots of kelp, then a windlass is
to be recommended.

Don't bother looking for an electric windlass - I've lost count of
the number of expletives I've heard in anchorages when fuses have
blown when lifting a forest of kelp.Alisdair
