RC8D Starter

Having bought my 1980 Hunter 27 several months ago, I've now discovered what I think is a problem with the starter on the Renault RC8D engine. Sometime is starts fine; sometime it doesn't turn at all. When it doesn not start, I hear a click at the starter, so I don't think there's a connection problem between the button and the starter. Also, the green light beside the button dims, so it's drawing current. So, my questions are: (1) Were can I find a starter (or any parts for that matter) for this engine? (2) Are there any mechanics in the Atlanta area that know this engine? (3) Any experiences you could share on this problem? Please feel free to e-mail me on this at nospam_surfdave@bellsouth.net. Of course, remove the "nospam_". Thanks, Dave

Common Hunter problem.

It may be common to many brands but I mainly watch the Hunter site. Search the Forum Archives and you will see a hundred references to the problem. I do not know, though, if I have seen it with the Renault before. At any rate the Related Link is a fix that many of us have implemented. You can test this idea by simply jumpering from the live 12V wire on the starter to the solenoid. You could use a screwdriver but better to buy one of those auto store push button jumpers. I'll bet it turns over immediately, first time, every time.

Pull the starter

Pull the starter and bring it to a parts store that deals in imports...There are aftermaket starters that will match up...They can also test it for you.

sounds like you need a starter.

The starter has a flat spot. Try an auto supply part store or the internet.

might be a solenoid

Dave - your problem may be the starter solenoid. I had to replace mine earlier this season, because one of the terminal posts had failed. If I recall correctly, the solenoid is easy to remove (easier than the starter, I'm sure...) and I took it to an automotive starter/alternator rebuilder, who knew just by looking at it what the part was. It cost me $25. Good luck! Pete Wallace Sans Souci

another possibility

Is it possible your battery is low? I had this problem occur and found a good recharge of batteries kicked her right over. Not sure about your battery set-up and how you monitor charge level but engines need a lot of power to start. My new best tool is a multi-meter. Good luck Ex Hunter 27 Owner
