I have a Hunter 340 built in 2000. As of last year, my Raytheon ST4000 Autopilot is easily thrown off course. Has anyone had similar problems? Does anyone know of a fix?

Autopilot woes

Pete,

I also own a Hunter 340 built in 2000 and had a number of issues with my old Raymarine 4000 before I eventually replaced it with a new X-5 system. If you can tell me more about what you mean by "easily thrown off course" it might be helpful in diagnosing your problem. Does your autopilot not stay on a heading, can the motor not keep the boat on a heading physically, or is there something else going on?

Let me know and perhaps I can help you figure it out.

Take care,
-Levin

Might be a good idea to find where the fluxgate sensor is mounted and make sure you haven't stored anything metallic in the immediate vicinity. Check that, check all the connections going into the control head then (if that doesn't work) go through the recalibrate/setup procedure.

Pete...

my old 4000 control head was mounted on the inside starboard side of the cockpit coaming back by the helm. Everytime we put one of those blue folding seat cushions back there, the boat would want to head off to the right. No longer does this with the new S-1 with a flux gate compass mounted down in the bilge.

Suggest you have some sort of magnetic interference occurring by something metalic or magnetic passing or being placed in close proximity to the control head.

Dan's correct for the older 4000 and 3000 units. They had the fluxgate sensor built into the control head. Yours is not. It's a separate piece, about the size of a can of tuna, black in color with a wire coming out. It'll be mounted on a vertical surface. Good places to check are under your aft berth and in the hanging locker in the aft cabin. I'll try to find you a picture.
