looking for advice on things to check when my digital (part of navpod set up) raytheon speed gauge just stopped reading .. and only shows 0 knots... i tried a reset... any advice?

Assume The Impeller is Clean?
From my experience, sometimes they look clean and even turn, but some growth on the sides or top can stop it from turning. FWIW, I use transducer paint on my paddlewheel and sides and top of the wheel housing. It seems to give me about six months betwen cleanings. If you haven't removed the impeller for cleaning, read the manual first and get a lot of towels before taking it out. It's really only a five minute (wet) job. Sorry to state something you probably already tried, but just in case you weren't familiar with it.... Rick D.

appreciate the tip.. since i have never changed the speed impeller while the boat was launched... when i unscrew the impellar... is there some sort of valve mechanism that closes? or am i just opening a through hull.. not sure if i have all the manuals when i bot the boat used...and sure dont want to flood the boat. im dealing with a catalina 320.

Raymarine Manuals
There is a flap that closes once you remove the transducer, but to be safe, have the plug ready. Pull it out fast, and you shouldn't have too much water come in. When I did mine the first time, I had someone standing by to help if needed. The link will give you all the Raymarine manuals. Just download your model number. Good luck, Steve

Later Raymarine units have a flap as Steve describes, from what I have read on these pages. All the ones I have ever had came with a dummy plug. I agree, have someone stand by with a plug (or even a folded towel) in case your's does not have that flap. And, yes, you get an exciting stream of water when you remove it. You need a slim pocket knife to scrape off some of the growth. Again, I suggest transducer paint if you have time to let it dry for a couple of hours. Rick D.

Careful with 'later' models....
My ST-60s are brand new - pulled the speed transducer out yesterday for cleaning, expecting the flap to stem the flow like on my other boat, and was quite surprised to see a large and steady flow of water before I was able to get the plug in.

Ken: I too have the ST60 series and also got the zeros. I cleaned the wheel, but still zeros. I checked with Ray Marine and was told that the transducer was bad. I bought another ($70), spliced the five very small wires together with the cable run to the helm station, and the problem ceased. BTW, I now take the transducer out and replace it with the plug everytime to prevent growth. The fouling has been particularly bad this year, maybe because the water temp is higher. I also cyphon out the bilge everytime I do this because of not wanting to have standing saltwater there too long. Just an anal thing. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

Save $ Less Problems!
Suggestion: Buy a lower cost GPS, it will do alot more than just tell you the speed!
