just got off the phone with tech support at raymarine, uuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh. how do these people stay in business!!!!!!!! i do not want to take my mast down this year and just bought their st60 wind, speed, depth. all i wanted to do is use my existing cable and wanted the specs on theirs, mark made me feel like i insulted God by asking such a question!! i own a alarm co. and know a little about wire and life safety. i beleive that any sheilded 5 conducter 20 gauge stranded copper should work. anyone else use their existing wire?? regards and belittled mike

Yes

The mast on the new Hunter 33 at my dealer's came pre-wired for the wind machine. I used a terminal strip at the base of my mast and (HORRORS) cut RayMarines wire lead at that point. Other than a continuing war with boat spiders it has worked flawlessly.

Ditto re cutting

I have had the ST60 instruments for 5 years now and because of a broken mast and other problems, I have cut, spliced and soldered the Raymarine cable several times. It was their cable, and they warned me about the impedance and other bad things that would happen. I decided to try it and it has worked flawlessly.

My Mast is down

I am adding ST60 wind and radar to my masty while its on the ground and already have cut both cables at bottom of mast. I was told by raymarine same thing not to cut any cables,I know others have done same without problems.

depth and speed

You guy are talking about cutting the wind cables. Can I cut my depth and speed instrument cables and still get accurate measurements?

ray depth/speed cables

yes, you can-Hunter built my 356 with the depth/speed senders reversed, so after talking to Ray they said we could cut the cables, as long as we made a good joint and sealed it well. worked fine! BTW, I've always had excellent results talking to their techs-they've always been helpful and know their gear-maybe the tech you got was just having a bad day :)

See Raymarine Website

Mike, The Raymarine website has a Q&A regarding changing from ST-50 to ST-60 instruments and reusing the transducers. They use a terminal strip to change interfaces. See the article at http://raymarine.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/raymarine.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=bT3Pa7Ah&p_lva=&p_faqid=909&p_created=1051548317&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTkmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1zdDYwJnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9MyZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT04JnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPTI2JnBfY2F0X2x2bDE9fmFueX4mcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9wYWdlPTE Bill

I had a similar experience

with them a couple of years ago. I was told that they do not have schematics of their instruments - they do not need them. They would not sell me a simple transistor or tell me a suitable substitute. I found one for that worked for that repair at Radio Shack for $.25. They are following the trend of many companies by not providing any support at all unless you pay them for it and maybe not then. I went to an auto parts store to get a quart of transmission fluid (ATF+4) for my 4 year old Plymouth Voyager last week and nobody has any for sale except the dealer. Dextron is $1 and the ATF+4 at the dealer is $5 and no one else has it. They offered to flush the tranny with 10 quarts for only $160 plus taxes and fees. They said it only would take 15 minutes. I won't buy another one of these! I used Dextron and it runs fine.

I reused part

I mounted a new Raymarine wind instrument and ran the attached cable to the base of the mast. But I cheated and reused the existing cable that ran from the base of the mast to the pedestal and I had no problems. Of course you can cut a wind instrument cable; you're supposed to use a wiring block at the base of the mast so you can remove the mast without pulling the wires all the way back to the pedestal.
