Im begining to plan the install of an X5 on my C30 (1990, MkII). Wondering if anyone has installed one of these? Have a couple of locations for the course computer (below nav. station, or on port wall of quarterbirth adjacent to the galley drawers under steps), but fumbling a bit with the fluxgate compass...thinking about putting it IN the closet, back wall, facing forward, as low and as close to the door as possible. Thats about as center-lined as I can get it, but still keep it away from the motor & keel.
Any advice would be appreiciated.

I have the Raymarine S1. It is like a X5 but I have a rudder sensor. My fluxgate compass is mounted in the bilge at the compression post. It is exactly centerline in that manner.

Mounting the rudder sensor was a big ordeal. Be glad that you don't have to do that.

Fox,

On my MkI boat I have a potable water tank in the starboard setee. I mounted my flux gate compass on it's forward bulkhead and it's worked with no problems. That location made it easy to wire and it's dry in my boat. Sounds like your choice of location would work as well though I'd bet. I mounted the computer way back in the corner of the quarter berth hopefull that it would be out of the way, dry and easy to wire. My only concern was that if I had to fiddle with it it's not in a very easy to work on location. Turns out I've never touched it after installing it a few years back.

Take care, DanM.

Rebuilt and expanded helm to accomodate X5 (starboard end) and C80, for more see http://backcreekcatalina.blogspot.com/ - look for 'A work in progress' post. Fluxgate compass is in the hanging locker to isolate from interference

Thanks for the input. I think I've settled on the hanging locker for the compass and under the nav. station for the course computer. I'll start the install in a couple of weeks. Nice looking helm Jimm.

My course computer is on the wall near the electronics panel. That isn't that important and the best thing to do is to put it in a place where things won't bump it or the wires going into it.
