Hello, I just bought my first Hunter 30 sailboat 1981. It needs all the electronics . I`m looking at the Raymarine ST60 Plus Depth System. My question is , How much better is the Bronze transducer than the Lexan, which one should I buy? And where is the best place to mount the thru hull transducer? There is a old thru hull transducer on the mid port side of hull under the bench sent, should I mount the new one using the same hole or leave that one there and mount the new one somewhere else? thanks Chet,

Replaced my original Data Marine this spring & used the 2 inch hole for the replacement--no problems

Your choice

Lexan is too sensitive to chemicals to use for thru-hulls. The black plastic is probably some form of glass filled nylon. No chance of corrosion and very resilient. The bronze is also somewhat pricey. My choice has been the plastic and I haven't had a problem. I placed the transducers (both depth and speed) on my 1983 33 as far forward as I could without drilling through the water tank under the V-berth. Had to build a fairing arrangement outside on the hull to provide a flat spot for the mushroom flange to seat on. Depth seems very good on both tacks, speed seems as unreliable as any other mounting spot. Rarely comes close to GPS reading.
