Raymarine ST60 Wind Direction Indicator Problem

I hope somebody can help me with some ideas. I've got a full set of Raymarine ST60 instruments on my navpod. About a month ago I lost the ability to get 'apparent' wind. It only indicates 'true' regardless what I set it to. Everything else appears to be working correctly. Thanks in advance. Frank S/V Dancer

Is GPS working

If the insturment can not read GPS sog and cog it can not give you apparent wind. Can your knotmeter give you sog? The only time I had that problem I realized that I had not turned on the chart plotter and the wind insturment was not getting the info it needed. Bob V

Bob - Knotmeter is giving SOG and the GPS is working. I don't need to turn on the chartplotter to get the apparent wind information. Frank S/V Dancer

checked for lose connection?

Is it possible that the wire from your gps to the wind insutment is loose or shorted? When I installed the chart plotter I noticed that the factory installed wire to the stereo volume control at the helm was rubbing on the steering chain. The insulation on that wire was close to worn through even though the boat had less than 50 hrs on the engine. Bob V

Check your speed paddle

Check to make sure your speed paddle is giving you a reading. The only time I run into the problem like you mentioned is when the barnacles lock up my paddle. On my Raymarine setup the wind instrument is comparing boat speed to wind speed giving you apparent. If you lose the boat speed it can't calculate and gives you nothing. If you have a GPS check for the option to use either speed through the water, which comes from the paddle, or speed over ground which of course if GPS driven. You may be able to switch over from one to the other and solve your problem. At the very least it may help you eliminate some possibilities. Good luck Mike

True Wind

Frank; I have the ST50 version. On my wind I switch from true to apparent, and if the knotmeter is not reporting a speed (speed through the water) I get the same reading on either setting. If the boat is not moving then true, and apparent are the same. If the boat is moving but no speed information is present then the reading is apparent, and true will read the same. Are you seeing the indicater change? My ST50 has a little dot that moves from true to apparent. The new ST60's may use SOG (speed over ground)which comes from the GPS to calculate true wind when moving. I think that is what BobV is saying. If the wind instrument uses SOG, instead of STW then it wouldn't matter if the knotmeter was working.

You all have been great!

Thank you. You all have given me some ideas on what I need to look at to resolve this problem. Frank S/V Dancer

AW + SOG -> TW

If you only have a ST60 Wind instrument, and no other instruments connected or working, then the only thing that it can read is apparent wind. If you ADD GPS (SOG) or Knotmeter (STW), then you can get True wind. If you were having a problem getting input data frm GPS or knotmeter, then I would think you would only get Apparent window, and not true. Chris
