Raymarine ST60 Tri Data

I recently acquired a Hunter 31. It needs an instrument updating. I have been told by my surveyor to add a Raymarine ST60 Plus Tri Data System mounting it on the after deckhouse vertical. How easy to read from a distance is the display on the tri data? I personally prefer individual wind, speed and depth ST60 units mounted on the pedestal guard because of the close proximity for older eyes. I am looking at both of these units at West Marine. Which route should I go and is there a lower priced place to purchase either of these choices? Is there any problem fitting multiple transducers into the underhull through fittings available in the H31? Greg W.

mount at the helm

Greg: I would not bore holes in the bulkhead. The first problem is the fact that there is usually someone sitting directly in front of the instruments. The other problem is running wires. I suggest that you get a tri-data and mount it at the helm. They are very visible. I just sold off my ST50 Speed display & ST50 Depth and exchanged it for the ST60 Tridata. My eyes are also old! Running the wire up the pedestal is not very difficult. You just need a fish tape. Chances are that you will need to mount new transducers. The best place on the H'31 is under the v-berth. Then you just need to run the wires back to the cockpit.

i have the tridata at the desk

and seperate st60s at the helm, i bought them all on ebay one at a time, depth, wind, and speed. i also bought the autohelm on ebay, if i had to do it over again.... i would buy the prepackaged kit (wind, speed, depth) value pack. i see them for about 1300 on ebay, more for the plus series. you will find many online boat supply sites that are far less than west marine, i personally bought alot from pyacht.com. cheers, mike

either - but I don't like RayMarine

I added the individual instruments to the cabin as suggested by your survey. If I had it to do over again, I would NOT use RayMarine. The instruments are fine, but the upgrades for NEMA 2000 are too expensive. Other manufacturers are high quality and have better prices.

Wind and Depth at helm, tridata in cabin

I agree that you don't want instruments on the bulkhead. We put ours on the pedestal guard with a repeater in the cabin over the chart table. Debre B: What is the cost and reason for updating to NMEA 2000?

I have mine on the bulkhead over the conpanyonway

That is forward of the doghouse slide. This is a legend 37 so I don't know if this is possible without building some sort of housing on a 31. I have found that the ST 60 instruments are easy to read even with older eyes from the helm and everybody in the cockpit can read them. They also are protected somewhat by the dodger. The wire routing was simple and only required one small hole in the overhead. The only thing I don't like about it is that someone going up or down the conpanyonway blocks the view. A minor problem except there seems to be lots of "traffic" just as we get to shallow water and I need to see the depth gage.

What About The ST60 Wind System

I've looked at the ST60 system too. Is the wind vane indicator something you can mount and install yourself? How do you get the wires down the mast? Are there any better/easier to install alternatives? Joe Mullee
