I have a Raymarine ST50 wind speed/direction unit. The speed unit started acting up last season. Went up on the mast today and removed the arm. The bearings in the speed end seem worn, but when I took it apart, it appears to be a sealed unit.

The base of the arm (where it attaches to the mast) is marked Z135 and 1150011 if that means anything.

Does anyone know if a replacement sender unit is available for this, or if in fact, the plastic unit can be disassembled and rebuilt?

I assume that direction unit is different than the speed unit?

Thanks,

Greg

I sprayed the cups and feather assembly with sailkote two years ago at the top of the mast and they have moved much more freely since then. You can also buy from Raymarine replacement plastic cups and feather for about $25.

I sprayed the shaft liberally with lubricant once I got it apart, and it does seem to spin better, but there is some play in the shaft (moves up and down a little). The direction shaft does not have this "slop" in it.

I guess if I can't find parts right away, I will put it back up.

Here is a link to T/S the ST50 wind transducer.

I was able to find a replacement bearing set on ebay in the uk. It seemed to be a commonly available item as opposed to here in the USA.

I did buy a set of cups and vane as a replacement kit from Defender a year ago just to have as spares (about $22). I was also able to find someone who had a spare transducer that had been given to him by a RayMarine dealer that was removed during an upgrade.

As for my own transducer that was non-functional, I found that the problem was a poor connection at the plug. Another person on this board recommended using Deoxit. I sprayed the contacts with Deoxit and the transducer began working again. De-Oxit is a spray that is used in the music recording industry for cleaning contacts and rejuvenating potentiometers. I found some at my local music store. The specific formula I used was "Deoxit D5" and it was about $20 locally. Since purchasing Deoxit D5, I have learned from relatives who are in the music and sound business that this stuff is the best product for correcting poor contacts.

Radio Shack also carries Deoxit but in very tiny amounts at big prices. I would go to a music store or buy on-line.

Thanks Rich.

I saw the bearing kit for sale in the UK, and have sent a note to the seller for instructions, as it seems that the end of the plastic housing is crimped on, so I don't know if i can get the bearings out to replace them.

The problem is in the bearings in the wind cup unit. Sometimes it works fine, other times ( particularly in light air), it just stops turning. I am getting a readout, but the cups physically "hang up".

Upon inspection today, there is a lot of "slop" in the shaft that the cups connect to....vertical play that I suspect is not supposed to be there.

I have clean it, lubricated it, and put the parts back together. I will probably install it back on the mast if it does not seem that parts are available.

Greg,

I would call Raymarine tomorrow and see if a bearing kit is available here in the USA. Although I have never seen the kit listed on their website with other parts, I would be surprise if the UK has the corner on these parts.

I did contact Raymarine, and the short answer was "we don't support this retired instrument, other than cups and vane replacement parts".

Thanks for the link to Stowe Marine. Any idea what these replacement units run? Greg
It was $4-500 ish US when I checked as I recall; don't know if that was with VAT or not. They answer e-mails quickly, shoot them one. I had some other ST50 problems too, so I wound up replacing the bunch with ST60+. In retrospect, I should have gone with a NEMA 2000 series like Furuno if I was going to go through that much expense and trouble. Having said that, the ST60+'s are doing fine. It's just that I'd like to get away from proprietary systems as much as possible. In your case, I'd try replacing the bearings and if you screw it up, nothing lost. IMHO of course!

I have the anemometer working fairly well after I disassembled and cleaned it. Will have to reinstall it to see if it reads correctly after my messing around with it. I agree that before I spend $500 just for the masthead unit....there are some nice systems out there (for a price) that I would upgrade to...

One more trip up the mast I guess. ;-)

There is a fella in england that sells all the parts including the chips...he sends the instructions along with the item. I found it to be a reasonable alternative to scapping the whole mess. Punch in ST50 wind in Ebay and his items ill all come up
