Hi All: I am about to install a Raymarine ST4000 on my boat. The instructions ask for a 12A fuse or breaker to be used. I have a spare spot on my control panel but can only find a 10A or 15A breaker. Am I right in assuming the 10A breaker is OK? It should trip sooner thus offering better protection. Or will it trip too frequently? Or should I use the 15A breaker? All help or comments greatly appreciated. Wally

Go with 10 amp...

I have never seen my ST4000 draw more than 6 amps. Use a 10 amp breaker and up it to 15 amps if it pops too often. You certainly don't need both a breaker and a fuse!!

I like Ted's approach. Use the 15A Circuit Breaker for power switching & convenience, AND the 12A (or smaller) In-Line Fuse for Equipment Protection. Any wire between the 15A Breaker and the 12A Fuse must be rated 15A (#14 AWG Cu.). Remember - Bigger Wire is ALWAYS BETTER Wire.

Why not call a tech rep at Raymarine and get it from the horse's mouth?

ST4000 Install

10Amp Breaker should be more than enough. Many folks hang additional instruments such as GPS on the Seatalk bus, thus RM recommendations are well beyond the 4-6Amp draw of the Autopilot. Jon
