I just installed the autopilot and am having trouble getting my settings just right (rudder gain, auto trim, etc.) Just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the settings they have set up in default for an H34, though I understand it will change with conditions. I seem to be snaking around a course pretty significantly no matter where I adjust it and regardless of sea conditions. Maybe I need a rudder sensor, do you have one on your 34? Thanks!

Rudder Gain

I had the same problem. The major change I made was reducing the rudder gain to 1. Seemed to make a big difference.

Robin: I agree with Gary. Try setting the Rudder Gain to 1. This helped me a great deal to adjust my ST4000+. However, frankly, it wasn't until I replaced the rudder bearings, which Hunter said were within tolerance, but I felt were sloppy, that I really fixed the autohelm. Now it holds very well.

Installing a rudder sensor

improved my st4000. before I installed the sensor it would overcorrect and swing back and forth.

Robin, I had the same problem with the ST4000 on my '83 H34 (no RPS) and got with the manufacturer. Here is what they said to set it at and it has worked fine since then: -Gain @ 2 (set to 1 if your wheel has less than 2 turns to lock) -Auto Trim @ 2 -Drive Type @ 2 (even though it says hydraulic) -Response @ 2 Hope this helps, Joe

Joe's settings also worked well on our 356-similar to earlier postings on this board

On our H31 when the ST4000 was first installed I too had a wandering problem. I reset everything to 2 and its now working well. Also it really helps if the boat trimmed "hands off" when under sail.
