I have a ST4000 autopilot which is not hooked up to my Garmin 545 GPS. Just recently the auto tach feature stopped working. If I press both buttons nothing seem to happen. Any suggestions?

Go on line with Raymarine and check on FAQ. Or e-mail them. You might need to send the unit back. It does not need the GPS to perform it's function.
If the buttons still change course as they should, plus and minus 10 and 1 degrees, then the buttons are making contact.. First thing I would check and reset is teh tacking angle setting.. Ya have to go into "dealer set-up" and set the angle that ya want it to tack through.. I would actually change it from the old setting and then back to the number ya want (110 degrees?).. When you push the 1 & 10 together on the same side, look at the display for the course to change the proper amount.. After that I would check the connections at the back of the instrument to be sure that one of those little buggers has not gotten loose as they are notorous for doing..

Any chance that the auto pilot is just becoming a bit finicky? I found with my ST4000 that the two buttons needed to be pressed exactly simultaneously for the auto-tack to start. Sometimes several attempts were needed to get a successful result. I have used the past tense "needed", because as I became better with my boat, I found tacking manually to be much easier and with better result than machine assisted. But my primary ST winches can be reached just by leaning a bit while still behind my helm and while I still have a hand on the wheel. So I haven't used the auto-tack feature for several years now.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I am on my way to the boat in the AM and will try them. Hopefully, one will work. I guess the contacts are OK as Kloudie1 asked because pressing them singlely does change course.
