Raymarine S1 and SPX-5

Ken, I wouldn't swear to it, but I think it's more or less the same. Probably have to do your setup again, but you knew that..
The plugs for the instrument head could be different. The S1 I believe has the old Seatalk. Plugs. The other may be the newer seatalknt or whatever it's called. You may need a converter box. I am not altogether certain. In any case it should still work.
Ken, I guess it would be too much trouble to take your control head with you? That would eliminate any discrepancies except electronic compass which I'm real sure is the same. The good news is the 'X-5' course computer has all screw fastened terminations that you are for sure aware of, but the reason I assume them to be more or less identical is I one time tried a 6000 computer with an X5 head and it worked. The only difference I could ascertain was the aforementioned Seatalk, and Seatalk Next Gen. But the new Ray auto's come out of the box with Seatalk cables, (with the NMEA-2000 stuff), to hook up these older accessories. Even NMEA-0183.
You know, for all the bad rap I hear about Raymarine, I seem to have little problems with their stuff, aside from my obvious stupidity in application albeit. I know some functions are not exactly to my taste, like the autotack maybe could use some tweaking, etc. It also won't back my boat out of the slip either..

Chris, thanks for the suggestion. Think I'll jus bring the Course Computer. Less of a hassle to remove. I'm banging it on just one Seatalk to get all Raymarine stuff talking to each other. Well if that don't work, it's back to the 'ol elbow grease on the steering.
I feel your pain Ken. I would rather eat a snake than steer a boat. And won't deliver one without it.

I actually delivered this boat to a port 36hrs away. Hand steer. The steering was heavy and lots of free-play !! Now I going to do a 72hrs deliver. Boy! I better get my Course Computer working. This boat has gone through 2 sets of Course Computers driving a Rotary Drive. Now I'm wondering if the Course Computers are damaged my the heavy and slacky steering system. Can it?
Auto Pilot replacement
Our boat is 2005 model so when I looked for a standby auto helm for a replacement we had to go to Raymarine to find one that would work with our system. The new systems don't function with our "old" system but did find a new one to stow below decks "just in case". We didn't want to be out hand steering in the So. Pacific then sitting at a dock for months looking for a replacement. You never have enough spare parts!

Having upgraded to an x5 and a p70, which was purchased on the marketing data, specifically the business about programmable auto tack which turned out to be mostly vapour-ware, and the compass was crap, and took a 1x6 lashed to the binnacle with the compass at the top to get calibrated the first time, and needing an itc5 to get the wind to work, and a few other email chains to the Ray techs, not to mention packing up all the new instruments and sending them 500 miles away to get firmware so they'd even start up, out of the box, I'll state that it's a pretty good system, once it's in and running.
Mine will back the boat away from the mooring but it won't light the blasted BBQ.
